Philippa Boyens says "The Hunt for Gollum" won't be split into two movies

Two live-action movies, and possibly more anime adventures. "Lord of the Rings" producer Philippa Boeyns is excited for the future of the franchise.
Writer and producer Philippa Boyens is returning to Middle-earth with an exciting new anime adventure.

In anticipation of "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim", MovieZine.se caught up with Boyens in London to ask about the future of the franchise.

Andy Serkis is set to direct "The Hunt for Gollum", while another live-action movie is in the works — though the focus of its storyline remains under wraps. If all goes well, Tolkien fans can also look forward to more standalone anime films in the future.

What's next for the "Lord of the Rings" franchise?

- It's kind of exciting actually. This has been a nice return, Boyens says.

- For me, I'm excited to see if we can keep doing these. Because I've now completely fallen in love with anime. And while I've been here in London I've caught up with Andy Serkis who is about to direct the next live-action film. And that has been incredibly exciting.

Yeah, "The Hunt for Gollum". How is it going? Is it gonna be one or two movies?

- It's definitely only one movie. I think there was some confusion when we agreed to do to two live-action films with Warner. And I think some people then assumed we were breaking "The Hunt for Gollum" into two. Absolutely not. It's one film, stand-alone.

- And then we are working on the possibility of what the second film can be. There are some amazing choices. I think what "War of the Rohirrim" proved for us is that a stand-alone story works. It doesn't have to involve Rings of Power or Dark Lords.
